This book explains how to provide Functional Family Therapy (FFT), an empirically supported, highly successful family intervention for delinquent and substance-using adolescents. FFT systematically alters important risk and protective factors associated with the problem behaviors.

The FFT therapist first increases family members' motivation to change by disrupting their dysfunctional attributions about themselves and each other and replacing them with more positive and adaptive perceptions. The therapist then works with the family to eliminate the problem behaviors and generalize new skills and interaction patterns to broader community relations.

Robust yet flexible, the FFT model has been replicated successfully in juvenile justice, mental health, and child welfare settings, as well as traditional substance treatment and school-based programs.

The symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often begin early in life. Yet only recently have these efforts begun to focus more closely on the specific needs of preschool-aged children who are disruptive or inattentive. This book, by George DuPaul and Lee Kern, a school psychologist and special educator respectively, is the first to describe empirically-supported early intervention with children aged 2-5 years who have or are at risk for ADHD. The authors present a three-tiered model for prevention and intervention that can be implemented at home or in preschool settings. This promising model can be adjusted to the degree of difficulty the child is experiencing and consists of universal intervention strategies, small group skills instruction, and assessment-based behavioral interventions. The more recent interest in the alliance with adolescents appears to be driven by myriad forces: interested researchers, frustrated clinicians, concerned parents, and policymakers engaged in healthcare reform. Elusive Alliance examines the conceptual, theoretical, and empirical bases of these myriad forces, presenting some of the highly promising work that has been accomplished over the past two decades on engaging high-risk adolescents in psychotherapy. By getting a picture of the current state of the field while also getting an in-depth analysis of a few specific programs of research supported by evidence examining adolescent engagement, researchers and clinicians alike will be able to establish a more robust knowledge base that serves to advance future treatment process research on how to engage the challenging and underserved population of high-risk adolescents.
