This edition of Atlas of Laparoscopic and Robotic Urologic Surgery seeks to be a comprehensive, detailed collection of minimally invasive urologic procedures, highlighting up-to-date technologies and applications of surgical devices. Surgical techniques have continued to evolve in the 5 years since the release of the previous edition. Innovations in perioperative management and new technologies have further influenced the ways we care for our patients. These factors incentivized a 4th edition of this atlas.
Several new chapters in this edition discuss novel implementations of minimally invasive surgical techniques. Innovations in laparoscopic and robotic systems, such as the da Vinci single-port robot, warrant new discussions for surgical applications. Thus, we have incorporated sections that address these technologies and their utilities in urologic surgery. To further supplement the updated chapter on the anesthetic considerations for laparoscopic and robotic surgery, we have included a chapter discussing enhanced recovery pathways after minimally invasive surgery.
This text contains contributions from pioneers and innovators throughout the world. Their additions and updates to the chapters reflect their individual technical expertise and commitment to surgical education. Furthermore, the continued inclusion of a “tips and tricks” section at the end of many chapters provides as space for each author to highlight essentials for success for each procedure. This atlas is further enhanced by a video library to provide nuanced step-by-step instructions for the described surgical techniques.
We would also like to recognize the staff at Elsevier whose tireless efforts facilitated the creation of this text. Belinda Kuhn's leadership and understanding of the importance of this work helped shape its contents and pushed the text through production. Karthikeyan Murthy and Ellen Wurm-Cutter wonderfully coordinated the operations of development and diligently kept all the editors and authors on track.
